Lesotho Statutory Bodies

Bureau of Statistics

 

The mandate of the Bureau of Statistics, which falls under the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning, is to set up a system of national official statistics on economic, social, demographic, including human resources, and environmental areas in relation to the development needs of Lesotho; and official statistics for purposes of economic and social planning, research, public information and international cooperation.

Independent Electoral Commission (IEC)

 

The Independent Electoral Commission of Lesotho contributes to the strengthening of a peaceful, stable and prosperous nation and a sustainable inclusive democracy through credible and regular local and national elections.

Lesotho Mounted Police Service (LMPS)

 

The LMPS is committed to provide safety and security to all in partnership with the community and other stakeholders.

Lesotho Revenue Authority (LRA)

 

The mandate of the Lesotho Revenue Authority is to provide a tax and duty environment characterised by integrity, efficiency and effectiveness, which treats all taxpayers equally, and offers rewarding career and growth opportunities to its staff.

Lesotho Communications Authority (LCA)

 

Lesotho Communications Authority (LCA), formerly Lesotho Telecommunications Authority (LTA), is a statutory body established in June 2000, with a mandate of regulating the communications sector in Lesotho. This mandate entails: issuing licences to operators; promoting fair competition; approving tariffs; managing the radio frequency spectrum; empowering and protecting consumers; type approving terminal equipment and other related matters.

Land Administration Authority

 

The Land Administration Authority is an autonomous agency of the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftainship that was established on 15 June 2010 by the Land Administration Authority Act 2010 to oversee the land ownership and distribution policies of Lesotho.

Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA)

 

The Water and Sewerage Authority provides customers in all designated urban areas with high quality potable water and environmentally sensitive wastewater disposal services through efficient and innovative processes. Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) serves over 300 000 people in the urban centres with potable water.

Basotho Enterprises Development Corporation (BEDCO)

 

The purpose of the Corporation is establishment and development of Basotho-owned business enterprises with particular emphasis on the promotion of indigenous entrepreneurial skills

Lesotho Housing and Land Development Corporation (LHLDC)

 

The mission of the Corporation is to assist in meeting the shelter needs of the people in Lesotho by providing a variety of housing sites, home ownership and rental accommodation options to cater for a wide spectrum of income levels in the most cost effective manner available

Lesotho Electricity Authority (LEA)

 

Lesotho Electricity Authority is an organization set up in terms of the Lesotho Electricity Act No.12 of 2002, to regulate and control electricity supply in the country.

Lesotho Electricity Corporation (LEC)

 

The mandate of the LEC is to generate, transmit, distribute and supply electricity and appurtenant works throughout Lesotho, in a manner calculated to satisfy customer needs for safe use and quality electricity services, at competitive and affordable prices.

Lesotho Tourism Development Corporation (LTDC)

 

Lesotho Tourism Development Corporation promotes Lesotho as a preferred
adventure tourist destination through strategic marketing and sustainable product and industry development in partnership with the private sector and the communities.

Metolong Authority

 

The Metolong Authority is a parastatal institution set up to administer the Metolong Dam and Water Supply Programme (MDWSP). The MDWSP’s main objective is the construction of the Metolong dam and associated infrastructure to supply potable water for domestic and industrial use to Maseru and neighbouring towns.

Lesotho Highlands Development Authority (LHDA)

 

The Lesotho Highlands Development Authority is a state body established to implement the Lesotho Highlands Water Project. Objectives of the Project are : i) To provide revenue to Lesotho by transferring water from the catchment of the Senqu/Orange river in Lesotho to meet the growing demand for water in the RSA's major industrial and population centres; ii) To generate hydro-electric power for Lesotho in conjunction with the water transfer; iii) To promote the general development of the remote and underdeveloped mountain regions of Lesotho; and iv) To provide the opportunity to undertake ancillary developments such as the provision of water for irrigation and potable water supply.

Central Bank of Lesotho (CBL)

 

The Central Bank of Lesotho is a statutory organisation fully owned by the Government of Lesotho and its mission is to implement appropriate monetary policy and proffer sound financial and fiscal advice, for the well-being of the country.

Lesotho Post Bank (LPB)

Lesotho National Development Corporation (LNDC)

 

The Lesotho National Development Corporation (LNDC) is the main parastatal of the Government of Lesotho charged with the implementation of the country’s industrial development policies. The role of the Corporation is to promote Lesotho as an attractive investment location for both foreign and indigenous investors.

Millennium Challenge Account Lesotho (MCA)

 

The Millennium Challenge Account (MCA) is a foreign assistance program of the Government of the United States of America (USA) to reduce poverty by promoting sustainable economic growth. The eligibility for Lesotho to the MCA landed her a five year investment compact worth US$362.5 million in the Water Sector, Health Sector Infrastructure and Private Sector Development which is currently under implementation.

National University of Lesotho (NUL)

 

The National University of Lesotho is the only public university, and its mission is to promote national advancement through innovative teaching, learning, research and professional services.

Centre of Accounting Studies Lesotho (CAS)

 

The Centre of Accounting Studies Lesotho is state-owned higher educational institution whose business is to provide quality professional accountancy education and training for aspiring and professional accountants in the private and public sectors.
